I received this stone scarab ( a scarab is a dung beetle which the ancient Egyptians believed it to symbolize renewal or resurrection) from a vendor at the pyramids.
The pyramids are more so a tourist attraction and so vendors are stationed throughout the site and bombard you with various trinkets, key chains and sculptures to purchase (at inflated prices of course). Unfortunately due to Egypt’s unsteady political scene and the start of the revolution tourism has decreased dramatically in Egypt and so those who rely on tourism to feed desperately and persistently trail behind foreigners with their merchandise in hope of scoring a sale.
As I mentioned before, this scarab was given to me by a vendor who insisted I take it for free. I assumed it was a scam and refused, but as he persisted to follow me and insist I take it for free I did as he said and placed it in my pocket. He assured me that it was a symbol of love and that if I gave it to the man I loved we would experience great happiness forever… I replied with a playful laugh, awkward smile and a quick shukran (arabic for thank you)
