My first weekend in Ciaro I set out to explore the club scene with the group. I was a bit unsure what would be appropriate to wear to a club in Egypt. In the states I view clothing as an accessory not so much a requirement, hahahaha; but I had done some thorough research prior to my travels and was brutally informed that the cultural norms in Egypt are much more conservative...or so I thought.
The upper middle class and upper class Egyptians are mainly the ones in attendance to the clubs in our area and they are quite liberal when it comes to dressing...especially in the night scene.
We went to a small club/bar called Ciaro Jazz where the pulsating rhythms of old school R&B streamed through the speakers of the live band. The music was wonderful but the lung collapsing fragrance of cigarettes nearly killed me. It totally surprised me to see how many Egyptians smoke cigarettes, both men and women... But what really shocked me was the smoking indoors.
I sashayed into Ciaro Jazz smelling of the Bath and Body works fragrance sweat pea and scampered out smelling like a box of Newport cigarettes :/
