Tahir Square is located in downtown Cairo and has been the landmark for numerous protests, marches, civil disobedience and demonstrations. Tahir square has and continues to be an international political focal point.
Thousands of protestors bombarded the square on January 25, 2011 in an attempt to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak’s regime, which took rule in 1981 and came to an abrupt end in 2011.One year later, with Mubarak overthrown, Cairo’s Tahir square occupied thousands to mark the first anniversary of the uprsing since Mubarak’s resignation. Thousands returned to the square to celebrate the success of Islamist parties in the upcoming elections while others were demonstrating for total political reformation.
